Trowell Services
Trowell Services opened on 23 March 1967 as the only motorway service station run by Mecca Leisure. Originally themed entirely around Robin Hood, it was known as ‘Mecca Village’ and featured mosaic murals by Hungarian artist George Dereford depicting fighting horsemen and archers. Financial struggles led to Granada taking over, removing all the Robin Hood theming. Now operated by Moto, the distinctive two-storey buildings positioned close to the M1 near Nottingham represent an almost old-fashioned design even when new.
