Rownhams Services opened in 1976 on the M27, with a subway connecting the two sides to reduce visual impact. The Prior Report of 1978 compared operating it to ‘running an ocean liner while waiting for the tide to come in’ due to incomplete surrounding motorways. The Department of Transport called it ‘the white elephant.’ Trees were removed during 2008 roadworks, making the previously hidden building visible. Now Roadchef’s showcase featuring their flagship Leon and SPAR brands.
