Leigh Delamere Services
Leigh Delamere Services opened on 14 March 1972 as Britain’s largest motorway service area, claiming to be the biggest in Europe with 41 acres. The 188-seat restaurant featured orange settees and kept lorry drivers separate from private vehicles. Originally operated by Esso Taverna, Granada acquired it in 1973. The character Leigh Delamere in Jasper Fforde’s novel The Eyre Affair demands a service area be named after his mother. The services appeared in Gavin and Stacey but was actually filmed at Cardiff Gate.
