Burtonwood Services
Burtonwood Services opened in August 1974 with two distinctive conical-roofed buildings designed by architect Patrick Gwynne to resemble ‘space age’ pagodas. The 1973 oil crisis increased costs, and the site struggled commercially. Described as ‘a commercial flop,’ it received little investment as empty car parks deterred customers. The westbound site closed in 2008 after junction modifications, later redeveloped as Gemini 8 with Travelodge and Starbucks. The remaining eastbound building retains its distinctive tall roof. Operated by Welcome Break.
