Birchanger Green Services
Birchanger Green Services opened at 7am on 9 March 1995 after 16 years without any M11 services. Planning had faced numerous problems since 1974. Originally called ‘Birchanger,’ ‘Green’ was added in the 1990s to sound more homely. Audrey Brown from Peterborough was the first customer. It featured Britain’s first motorway coffee bar, Caffe Primo, with palm trees and marble tables. Remaining the M11’s only service area, it’s Welcome Break’s busiest site and ranked fourth busiest nationally.
