Woolley Edge Services
Woolley Edge Services opened in 1972 between junctions 38 and 39 of the M1, built despite challenging geological conditions including coal seams and a railway tunnel beneath the site. The distinctive roofs remain recognizable from the original Taverna design. Initial construction attracted no bids, marking the first failure of the tender system. Low traffic levels caused ongoing difficulties, and the transport cafés closed by the 1980s. Granada later leased the land for 25 years at approximately £2.5m annually. Now operated by Moto as a Megabus interchange point.
