Hartshead Moor Services
Hartshead Moor Services opened on 5 July 1973 at the UK’s highest elevation for a service station. Built by Shepherd Construction for Ross Motorway Services, the opening was delayed by a Sir Alec Merrison report on box girder bridges. On 4 February 1974, an IRA bomb killed 12 people on a coach nearby; the services became a makeshift hospital and investigation base. A memorial was erected in 2009. The first permanently-lit Yorkshire motorway section. Operated by Welcome Break.
